The Dream of 10,000,000 Mustangs

When the first Ford Mustang galloped off the production line in 1964, there was probably no one who predicted that there would someday be one million Mustangs made.

Much less ten million Mustang cars.

But that's a milestone that Ford Motor Company recently hit, with its 10,000,000th Mustang muscle car rolling off the line last month at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

More than 60 Mustang owners and enthusiasts--piloting Mustang cars of every shape, era, color, and engine type--came together to celebrate this monumental occasion and pay their respects to the long history of America's top muscle car.

The History of the Mustang: From 1964 to Now

In 1964, the first Ford Mustang cost about $2,500. Yes, really. It garnered a lot of attention quickly, and dealers had a hard time keeping them in stock. Not much has changed, except it’s a little more expensive these days.

1965 was the debut of the first-ever Mustang made by Shelby.

1967 introduced the first-ever Shelby Mustang GT500.

1984 marked the 20th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, which was also when one of the first Mustang GT cars, with a potent and specially-tuned V8 engine, hit the market.

In 1994, the Mustang saw its largest design change since its birth 30 years before--with the start of the fourth generation, the Mustang adopted a smoother, sportier body without losing its classic good looks.

A fifth-generation Mustang was introduced in 2005, with styling cues inspired by fastbacks of the 60s--this was the first model made at the Flat Rock Plant where the ten millionth model was crafted.

2010 introduces a modern-looking Mustang Convertible.

In 2014, the sixth-generation 2015 Mustang celebrated 50 years with massive changes to design, technology, performance, and features.

Finally, in 2018, the Ford Mustang takes on a serious makeover for its mid-cycle refresh, with updated engine and transmission options, and smarter new tech.
