2018 Ford F-150 vs. 2018 Ram 1500
When you need extra muscle to take care of your heavy lifting, conquer worksites, and haul big toys, a light-duty pickup truck makes for the perfect companion. The Ford F-150 reigns in the segment, earning a whole lot of love (not to mention awards) from drivers over the course of its impressive lifespan. The 2018 Ford F-150 is yet another addition to an incredible lineage. But how does the 2018 F-150 fare with challengers like the Ram 1500 hot on its heels? We decided to find out.
Hauling Power
Many drivers judge a truck by how much it can carry. Neither the Ford F-150 nor the Ram 1500 balks at heavy loads, but the F-150 outlifts its rival when it comes to both max towing and payload capacities. Depending on its configuration, the F-150 can tow up to an impressive 13,200 pounds. The Ram 1500 caps out at 10,620 pounds. The F-150 also has a superior payload capacity, able to haul up to 3,270 pounds in the truck bed while the Ram 1500 only manages 1,880 pounds.
The Ford-150 also offers Pro Trailer Backup Assist and a variety of other features such as a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and 360-degree camera to help you safely manage trailers.
Efficiency
If you're looking for a truck that lets you make the most of what you put into it and allows you to spend less time at the pump, the F-150 pushes past the Ram 1500 in terms of fuel economy. Equipped with the new base 3.3L TI-VCT V6 engine, the F-150 can offer up to 20 city/25 highway mpg, outpacing the Ram 1500 by a few miles per gallon. The Ram 1500 only outruns the F-150 in terms of fuel-efficiency if you upgrade to the diesel engine option.
One of the Ford F-150's features that consistently puts it ahead is its military-grade aluminum alloy body. This makes the Ford F-150 considerably lighter without sacrificing durability, so its engines don't have to work as hard to get it moving. In turn, this gives you all the advantages of a powerful, fuel-efficient truck.
Interior
Both trucks offer generous space for up to six passengers depending on your choice of cab style. The Ford F-150 comes with cloth upholstery, but you can opt for vinyl or leather depending on your needs. The Ram 1500 defaults to vinyl and offers cloth or leather as options. In terms of technology and other features to cater to your convenience and help you stay connected, the Ford F-150 offers a bit more. While both trucks offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the F-150 ups the ante a touch with push-button start and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety
When you need to be as confident in your truck's ability to keep you safe as you are in its ability to handle your workloads, the Ford F-150 answers the call with a bit more enthusiasm. The Ram 1500 offers a ParkView Rear Back Up Camera and a ParkSense Front and Rear Park Assist System, but that is about where its driver-assist features end.
The Ford F-150, on the other hand, offers advanced systems like Cross-Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision Assist, and Lane-Keeping System to help you stay on your intended path and out of harm's way. You can also take advantage of Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go Technology to automatically keep a preset speed and distance away from the vehicle in front of you. The Ford F-150 also earns better safety scores overall, making it a better choice if you intend to use it as more than just a workhorse.
